Thrifty Things Friday #115

Hi everyone!
TTF CoHost 1
Linda and I are so happy you could join the party today!
As many of you know, I have been doing more “reverse thrifting” lately. Meaning I have been purging and donating instead of buying things. So, today I am sharing a thrifty tip for readers like me. I read a lot! Actually Troy and I both are major readers. It is our “need to relax and shut out the world” method. I know a lot of you are the same way.
And if you are like me, you are a book thrifter. I think the only brand spankin’ new books I buy are for gifts. Otherwise, I watch for used book sales at libraries, thrift stores and right now, yard sales!
Keeping track of what books I have already read and what specific books I am looking for can be a pain. Have you noticed how they “reissue” books with a different cover? And then you buy it AGAIN thinking you haven’t read it? That is so aggravating to me!
Goodreads: Book reviews, recommendations, and discussion
One way to help keep track of what you have already read is through a site called Goodreads. It allows you to add the books you have read, you can review them so others can see what you thought of it. It also gives you the chance to add books that you want to read. This is kind of a handy site that I even downloaded the app on my phone so I can easily check out if I have already read a book when I am standing at a yard sale going through a box of books.
And don’t you love when you find a new book and you absolutely love the book and discover there is a whole series of these books? I love to be able to read book after book of the same series. You get so comfortable with the characters. However, keeping up with which of the books from that series you are looking for is difficult.

For instance, I love the “In Death” series by JD Robb. And I have quite a few of the books from this series. But, the titles are so similar it is easy to find one of these books and think that I haven’t read it before. Yes, I have purchased many duplicates!

What I do is I go to the authors website, look for the series of books I am reading, find the chronological order of the books and print that sheet off. Then cross off all the ones I have and now I have a list I can keep in my purse showing the titles that I am looking for.

As you can see from above, I have also hand written a couple of other series and what books I am looking for in them.
Just a easy tip to help us major readers out and to help us save our money for the books we HAVEN’T read!
Now it’s your turn! What thriftiness do you have to share today?

  1. What great info my friend. I keep the books I've read listed in my journal and even rate them but I don't have the list when I get to the library and sometimes I come home with a book I've already read. I'll check out the link! Oh...I'm a BIG fan of Janet Evanovich, too! We love her sense of humor! Have you watched the movie, One for the Money? It's very cute! Hugs!

  2. I've used Goodreads for quite a while. I love being able to keep track of the books I want to read and looking them up when I'm at estate/yard/garage sales!

  3. That's a really helpful tip! I think I looked at Goodreads once a while ago but never did anything with it.

I hate it when they re-issue books with different covers! Also, magazines. They do that a lot too!

  7. I'm going to have to check out Goodreads. I'm reading the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series. Love them. I'm always on the lookout for the ones I'm missing at garage sales. I just have to read them in order. Thank you for hosting. Excited to see what everyone has to share.

  10. Diann I use to keep a notebook with a list of every book I read. I started using goodreads also and I love it. You can search by author or most recent book you've read. It's great. I need to download it to my phone so I too can see what I 'need' in a series. It always cracks me up to see how much alike we are! I've got internet hooked up today (yay) so I can visit TTF posts this week!!

    hugs,
    Linda

  14. Thanks for hosting! What a great idea, I can't tell you how many times I started reading a book I'd already read because after awhile, who can keep track? I have an appointment, so will be back later to visit the link ups. :) Pam
