Make Your Own Taco Seasoning

Hi everyone!

Taco seasoning is something I ALWAYS have on hand. However, have you noticed the ridiculous prices of seasoning packages lately? You can find some of the basic seasoning packages like taco, sloppy joe, brown gravy ect. for around $1.00 at different places. But, even that can add up quickly.

Since I have a good supply of spices on hand all the time (you can still buy them for a dollar or under at the dollar stores or places like Big Lots), it is much cheaper to make up your own taco seasoning and keep a good size jar of it on hand. And it is super easy!

Taco Seasoning:

  • 2 Tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 Tablespoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper

Mix all ingredients together.

I generally make this recipe up in 4 times each of these ingredients to have a good supply on hand. Keep in an air tight jar and label it.

Use two tablespoons to equal one packet of seasoning.

Once I learned some basic recipes for different dry mixes, I have never gone back to buying individual packets. I have saved a lot of money over the years by doing this.

  1. Great recipe. I havn't tried this one, but I just copied it and will definitely use it. I always buy spices at the 99c store and anywhere that has them cheap. They're the same. I mix most of my own also. Thanks again for the recipe. Hugs, Marty

  2. It's also a great idea to help use up the spices we have and keep them fresher! Happy Weekend Diann:@)

  3. I will make this for sure. I hate paying those prices for the packets!

  4. I thank you for sharing this recipe. I will copy this and use it. I will leave out the salt but now I know what else to use.
I am on a no salt diet and I can never use the prepared stuff because of the percentage of salt.
    This is a heart saver!

  5. Great post!!
    copying and saving..
    thanks for sharing!

  6. I have been making my own packets for almost a year and they take very lil time and taste much better...

  7. I used to do this all the away from it for some reason...ah yes "he" didn't like it. Well, "he" is gone, so will start again!
Thanks so much for the reminder!!

  8. Hey, Diann! I just bought a mammoth-sized jar of taco seasoning from Costco, but I'm going to give your recipe a try before I crack it open so I can take it back! :-) congratulations on your big win over at Cuisine Kathleen's!!! Have fun with that pan!!!

  9. This sounds delicious! I love homemade sauces. They always taste so much better than jars, I think. And I have to say that my mouth is already watering at the thought of yours!
