Let Your Dishwasher Do the Work!

Hi everyone!
Do you just use your dishwasher for dishes? This appliance is a workhorse to take care of a lot of tedious cleaning projects around your home! So, think outside the box and lighten your cleaning load!
Some things that can be thrown into the dishwasher that are not dishes:
  • Toothbrush holder
  • Cup holder
  • Hair brushes, combs and hair accessories (make sure all the hair is removed first)
  • Removable Cup holders
  • Stove knobs
  • Ceramic Kitchen cabinet knobs
  • Refrigerator shelves
  • All you desk accessories that are plastic or metal (no acrylic)
  • Vent covers
  • light covers/globes
  • scrub brushes
  • Plastic toys
  • Faux flowers (put in mesh bag and place on top shelf on dishwasher)
  • Switch plates
  • Vacuum attachments
  • Dust pans
These are just to name a few. Remember, when you are doing a load of these non-dishes, don’t wash your dishes with them. These all should be a separate load.

  1. My "dishwasher" is the 2 legged kind. I can throw those things at him but not guarantee they'll come back any cleaner.

I have also been told you can steam fish and veggies in a dishwasher.

  2. Very good ideas! Thanks for sharing!

  3. Those greasy covers over the fan on my ancient stove hood. Eeeewwww!

  4. I definitely utilize my dishwasher for more than dishes. I have used it to clean all the items you listed as well as the filters Jeannine mentioned. When the boys were young, I washed their baseball caps and some of their sports gear in the dishwasher. I also throw in my sponges, broom and mop heads, dustpans, shower heads, etc. Dishwashers - not just for dishes!

Thanks for sharing this list with us. I am going to send the link to my dil.

  5. Diane, I never thought about using the dishwasher to clean my vacumn cleaner parts!

  6. Yes I agree it is amazing what they can do and I have one which I use daily. Although sometimes I feel a little guilty as are they green and thrifty? Discussion still out on that one!:)
