It's Apple Season!

Hi everyone!

Well, it is Apple Season again here in Michigan. Did you know that Michigan is one of the biggest producers of apples? Yup, we are! And everywhere around us right now is different "Applefests" happening. And the local apple orchards are having all kinds of fun fall days starting up. Pick your own apples, hay rides, fresh apple cider with hot homemade doughnuts, pumpkin patches, corn get the idea. These fun "apple days" will go through October and we will visit as many as we can. They are just a lot of fun.

So, to kick off the apple days, I thought I would revisit a post I wrote about this time last year.

These 2 apple recipes are used from the same apple mixture. And they are very quick, easy and very yummy! My pictures aren't that great. Both of these were a major hit around here so much so, not only did I make them several times for us, I made several of the apple monkey bread for different family members.

Here is another good example why I thrift. Throughout the year, I look for cheap pans/serving dishes so that when I make homemade goodies for someone, I can present it to them in the pan hot from the oven and not worry about getting the pan/platter/dish..whatever, back.

Just something to keep in mind now that colder weather is here. I don't do very much baking during the summer but, love to do it when the temperatures start cooling off.

Since apples are in major abundance right now, we seem to have a lot of them. So, I have been playing around with making some desserts.

Sometimes I am in the mood to do the full "from scratch" thing. But, sometimes, I just want to whip up something simple. So, these two recipes I put together are "cooking hacks" because I used a couple of pre-made products.

Last month, I got quite a bit of the Pillsbury refrigerator biscuits and crescents for little to nothing (big sale & lots of coupons!). So, I played around and made a couple of desserts.

The first one I used the crescents.

Here are the other ingredients:

6 Jonathon apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
1/3 cup of sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp Cinnamon
3 T softened butter
1 T flour

Mix all together.
**I wish I would have chopped the apples a lot smaller than what I did. So, I would recommend cutting the apple pieces very small.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Unroll the crescents and smash them down just a little. Put a good T of mixture on the crescent and roll up. I tried to pinch some of the edges the best I could so the filling wouldn't all seep out during baking. Bake for about 20 minutes. They didn't come out real pretty but, OMG! They tasted so rich and buttery!!

Since I only used half of the mixture, I grabbed a can of the Grand biscuits and cut them like you make monkey bread (each biscuit cut into 4 pieces)

I rolled each piece in a cinnamon/sugar mix and put them into a round cake pan (sprayed). The one can makes just the right amount to fill the entire pan (you do a little squishing along the way).

Once the pan was filled with the biscuit quarters rolled in the cinnamon sugar, I just dumped the rest of the apple mixture on top and spread it around. I put the pan in the already heated 400 degree oven. Baked for about 25 minutes.

WE can't decide which one we like better! I have a feeling I will be receiving requests for both of them from the Hubs in the future!

I put the bread back in the oven after the one picture above because I had followed the time from the package of biscuits. They weren't fully cooked so, back in the oven for another 10 minutes and they came out great. The bottom of the biscuits almost creates a caramelized crust. YUM!!

A little coffee and dessert and we were happy campers! LOL

The coffee mugs, plates and pumpkin votive holders, which make very nice spoon rests, were all from the dollar store. The basket tray was from a yard sale a few week ago, $2.00, the cream and sugar dishes were from The Home Goods store years ago (clearanced because of a chip, so I paid $1.29 for the set) and the napkins were recently purchased at Walmart in the clearance aisle for $1.00 (a pair).

  19. First a great deal on dough and then wonderful ways to make seasonally delicious treats. You must be doing something right in life.
    Not as many apple fests on the east side of WI but when I lived across state on the MN border we had some good times.
    Right now my yard is producing apples for the local hunters to feed deer. (Hunting is not my thing but sharing apples keeps neighbors friendly to me.)

  26. I can't wait to try the apple recipes. Living in Winchester, VA for 30 years - where apples reign supreme - I was surprised to hear that Michigan also has apples.

  27. YUM! Love the mosaic with it fall colors and yummy food. My Uncle Don used to come down from Michigan every year and bring us a ton of apples. We would make applesauce, pies, tarts, cakes, bread, etc.
