Pictures or Frames?

Odd title huh? I am curious, when you go thrifting and junkin' do you look at pictures for the picture or for the frames? I have to confess, I zoom right into the frame. Rarely do I even notice the picture any more.

To go out to a regular retail store and buy a frame and then if you need matting, well, you can start to really run into some money. So, I try to find pictures that I really like the frames and the matting at thrift stores or yard sales. I have become quite the wizardess wielding an Exacto knife! I love to find unusual or just really nice frames to either be painted or re-stained for my own pictures or different projects.

So, I have a pretty good stash of pictures just ready to be re-done.

Even at thrift stores, the prices of framed artwork has gone through the roof. Have you noticed that? And it's not like these pieces are original paintings or even anything special. Okay, I promise, I will drop this subject on pricing and thrift stores now. I think I have made myself very clear how I feel about that whole subject! LOL

This past weekend, I kept my eyes open for frames. I have several 8x10 photos of the princess I want to frame and I want to make some tea trays and a couple of other frame related projects.

So, I thought I would share a few of the pictures that I recently got that I plan on using the frames for other things.

Although the flower picture is pretty, this whole look is just not me. However, the matting and wood frame is nice. The center will be perfect for an 8x10 picture. The frame will get a do-over. the large outer mat may get a little do-over as well. I won't know until I put the picture in it.

$8.99? Um...how about no! I paid $1.00. I will let you know right now, all of the following pictures I paid $1.00 each for of them.

Now, this one, I normally would have ignored because the frame is plastic. However, the fun shape of it caught my eye. And it will be a "project' frame. Not for a picture.

This one has a really nice detailed wood frame. I can't pass that up for a $1.00

I also really like the detail in the matting. So, I am not sure what this frame will be used for, but it has good bones.

Perfect size wood frame for framing pictures.

Now this one, I instantly saw and thought it will make a nice tray.

These two I bought specifically for projects however, I am kind of liking the simple leaf picture in each one. So, now I am not sure. LOL These might be nice to use to switch up wall decor in the Fall.

So, those are the pictures I picked up for a buck a piece just for the frames. Have you got a stash of thrift find pictures that you plan to use the frames in different ways?

I am linking up to these fun parties:

  1. You have found some nice frames, Diann. I do like the shape of the plastic one...it would look great painted black, though.

  6. I recognize the picture of the birds. I use to have that in my home! It's home interior I believe! LOL! I do love the picture of the lady in the wicker bench! To bad I can't buy that one from you for a $1.00!

  7. I look at the frames also, sometimes you strike gold with an old gesso frame. i have to tell you I like the cat and boot pic. Thrift store is the only way to get mats as they are so expensive.

  8. OH my gosh, Diann, I have no idea how you do it, but you really get good deals. I saw the exact same picture, the one of the woman sitting on the wicker chair outside in the hat with the blue ribbon around it... they wanted $40 for it, and it wasn't in any where as near good shape as the one you found. Wow, that was one long sentence. Poorly constructed too. lol

You go girl! Keep finding those deals.

  9. I have a huge stash of frames that I have purchased at thrift stores for the frames....not the pictures. It all started when I was hunting for vintage frames for old family photos. It just kept snowballing and the next thing you know I have over 50 frames of all sizes. I need to come up with a really creative idea to rid myself of some the frames!!
    Have a great weekend.
