Thrifty Shelf Redo

We have a sliding glass door in our living room and over that is a shelf that runs the length of it. I love this shelf because it gives me a great "display" area for holiday decorating. I also love this shelf because it was my parents mantel over their fireplace when I was a kid. My dad made it. They have long since redone the whole fireplace area but, my dad NEVER throws out a piece of good wood! So, this board has been in his garage for a lot of years. About 8 years ago I spotted it and asked him if I could have it for shelves in my living room. He and Troy cut the piece into this shelf and one over my other window. They cut out some matching brackets for it and then I had to try recreate the very old rich deep color of the mantel wood. You don't even want to know everything that went into it!

The last time I decorated it was for Easter. It has been just sitting empty and lonely. Poor empty big shelf! Maybe I was too distracted by everyday problems, but nothing was coming to mind to put up there. Then I got the fruit dishes I showed you last week.

I decided to shop my home for some of my white ironstone tureens and pitchers. I have shown you all of these pieces at one time or another. they were all purchased at thrift stores. I had wanted to display some white ironstone before but, because our living room walls are blah eggshell, they just didn't really show up. But, I think with the colorful fruit plates, it works. At least I am happy with it. Remember, this was just a big empty shelf for the last few weeks. Of course, now it is time to make new valances. When we first put thee shelves up, I had Indian pottery up here and the birch tree fabric was a nice match. Now, not so much!

  6. Diann, I love the way you added the ironstone pieces to that shelf. I am on the hunt for some ironstone tureens or bowls at a bargain price. I have found a few things, but some prices are so high. Thanks so much for stopping by with your sweet comments. You sure don't want me sewing anything for you yet. Boy, do I have a lot to learn. Taking baby steps.
