Eating Healthier and Cheaper!

Are you trying to cut your grocery bills but still eat healthy? It's not always easy. For me, it depends on what time of the day I shop.

I try to make a run to the grocery stores late at night a couple of times a week. That is a good time to get all the mark down items. Especially fruit and veggies.

Last night I headed over to Meijer at about 11:30. I went exclusively for markdowns. And I got a few things.

Here is what I got....

1/2 pints of yellow raspberries. I have never had yellow raspberries before but, thought "What the heck". They were .15 cents each. I got 6.

I cleaned them all today and about 1/4 of them went in the trash. they are very tangy so, I added a little bit of Splenda and mixed them all together. We enjoyed them for dessert tonight.

A package of grape tomatoes. There were no bad ones at all in this batch. They were
.24 cents.

A head of lettuce, also no brown leaves or bad spots on the outside. It was very fresh when I used it tonight in a salad. It was .49 cents.

A bag of 3 tomatoes. Once again, they were just perfect! They were .47 cents.

I actually got 2 bags of these avocado's for .75 cents a bag. There was 5 in each bag. Now these were super ripe. I made a big honkin' bowl of guacamole tonight. YUM!!

I also got a bag of 6 oranges for .75 cents.

Here was my fruit and veggie haul...

I spent less than $3.50 for all of it.

When you buy reduce fruit and veggies you need to use them generally within the next 48 hours. I will often clean and freeze a lot of my reduced fruit and veggies for later use. But, last night, I didn't get a huge stock of stuff so, we just enjoyed a lot of it today.

Saving money and getting fresh produce so works for this family!

  2. Wow! Our groceries certainly don't do that! I'd be shopping for my large family in the middle of the night for those prices!

  3. Those are my kind of deals! I am going to check and see if any of the grocery stores in my area do that. I would certainly stock up on the fruits and freeze them for my morning smoothies.

  4. Wow! You got some great deals! And some of it was organic! I love Meijer! I used to visit their store when I went to visit vendors in Cincinnati when I was a buyer. They remind me of Target but MUCH better prices on the groceries. We don't have them in Houston, poo!
