Use What You Have - Thrifty Organizing Alternative!

Organizing and saving money, those were the two things I first thought of when the new year rolled around.

I think most of us are "container freaks" at heart. We love all the cool, cute and awesome different containers that are out there these days. There are so many for different jobs. And I do buy them occasionally when they are clearanced super cheap, which doesn't happen often. But, generally these organizers are on the expensive side.

So, finding cheap or free organizers that are around the house is always a good thing.

Okay, I am about to enter the embarrassment of showing you one of my cabinets. This is the top cabinet of a free standing cabinet I have in my kitchen. I use it mostly for boxed and bagged packages of food. I don't know about you, but all those bags of food just do not stack! Every time I open this cabinet I would basically duck in fear of having some flying food packages come shooting out at me!

I decided I was going to go and buy a couple of baskets and see if I could get this flying bagged food under control.

Then I saw this box that Clementines came in. We got two of these boxes for Christmas. And I decided these were perfect for what I needed.

Bagged items fit nicely inside.

Here is what the cabinet looked like before I added the boxes.

I pulled out everything and rearranged with the boxes.

You could cover the boxes with pretty scrapbook paper or decorate them any way you want but, I actually smile to myself when I open the cabinet door and see the words "Cuties" in big letters. I'm odd. LOL

So, rethink things you already have on hand. You never know what will work for you.

  2. I love this idea and I have one currently filled with the fruit. But like everything else I want to spray paint mine. Maybe Oil Rubbed Bronze to match my hardware. Thanks for the great idea.

  8. Hey, I do that too! My pantry shelves are made out of closet organizer shelving. So the small bottled things always tilt because of the grate and end up falling over and rolling off. Velveta boxes are one of my favorite organizing boxes. :)

    Great job!

  9. This is a great idea! We do a similar thing with our snack shelf. Small things go in an empty box so they don't get lost among and bigger bags/boxes of snacks.

  10. Hi Diann,

I'm Lauren from Springpad. Since I saw that you were posting about frugally your organizing your home, I thought I'd let you know about a cool online tool to help you organize just about anything else in your life. Springpad (http://springpadit.com) is a free personal organizer that allows you to upload any notes you want to remember, clip websites, products, and articles and then access all your stuff online or on your phone. But, we take it a step further by putting all the info you store to work for you in our free apps. For example, you can save recipes from any website and then have them all neatly organized in your recipe box (http://springpadit.com/appdirectory/aboutapp/recipebox) and then use our free meal planner app to create a dinner plan and a complete list of ingredients. You can also keep track of all your wine notes (http://springpadit.com/appdirectory/aboutapp/winenotebook), keep a list of restaurants you want to try (http://springpadit.com/appdirectory/aboutapp/restauranttracker) or easily store all your travel plans like confirmation numbers, maps, places to go, etc (http://springpadit.com/appdirectory/aboutapp/tripplanner). You can also set alarms to send emails or text reminders. Other great apps include a budget tracker, a meeting notebook, a holiday gift planner, a date night planner, and other useful tools to help people get organized. Would love to get your feedback!
