Silver Sunday!

Don't ya just love silver! If you do, you need to stop by Gypsy Fish and check out all the beautiful silver being shown today!! Just go to the blog and you will find all the participants listed on the right hand side. I will forewarn you now, you will want to get something to drink and get comfy because there are a lot of folks showing amazing silver pieces!!

I have wanted a nice set of old silverware forever! But, complete or almost complete sets are hard to find and when you do, you better have some serious cash stashed away! I have bid on many sets on Ebay and they always go way over the price I can afford! I have scoured flea markets, antique malls, thrift store, you name it looking for a set for a decent price for a very long time. Heck, just the boxes the silverware come in are in high demand and cost anywhere from $30.00-$100.00. Yup, that's just for the box!

You know what's coming right? Diann finally found a set of silverware at a great (and I mean FANTASTIC) price! And the box is in amazing condition!! Now, it is not a complete set. I need salad forks and the serving utensils but, it is a pretty good full set!

Troy and I were at a local "Trade Center". I don't know if they have these all over the country or not but, what it basically is, is a large indoor flea market. It is open 5 days a week. Lots of vendors. Some way over my budget and some very reasonable. Well, we actually went to the Trade Center to talk to a guy who has a booth for fixing computers. We need to have our PC fixed. We got there at 2:00pm and found out the computer guy doesn't get there until 4:00. So, with 2 hours to kill, I was like a kid in a candy shop!

Let's just say that I spent all the rest of January's "thrifting budget" all in one day at this place!! And I have no regrets! OMG! You will not believe all the beautiful things I found and got for amazing prices! I was at my finest when it came to haggling. I was acting all "Monty Hall-ish and Let's make a deal"!! LOL

I will be showing you all my treasures over the next couple of weeks since I will NOT be going to any thrift stores until February! I have a budget, and like a good thrifter, I stick to it!

Okay, on to my silver find! This, of course, was the biggest part of my thrifting money, although Troy handed over some of his spending money for it too. We both fell in love with this silver and for this price we were both willing to give up some of our "allowance" LOL

Here is the beautiful box that houses this silver. It is beautiful wood and is in great shape. There are a few scratches here and there, but overall, not bad especially since we discovered that this set was only produced in 1944.

This is exactly like I got it. I haven't cleaned it yet. We did some research on this set as soon as we got home from the trade center and discovered it was made in 1944 by Walleningford (which is also the same company as Wallace and Harmony House). Wallingford only made one design per year. They did not keep producing the same design over and over. This design is called Maytime.

I found this set in a glass cabinet in a vendor booth. The price on it as $75.00. Not a bad price but, too high for me. The vendor wasn't there and although the price was too much for me, I still wanted to get a closer look at the set. So, I got one of the worker's to come over and open the cabinet. I just loved the set! I handed it back to the worker and she said to me, "You know that this vendors items are all 50% off right?". I think I scared her when I dove at the box of silver and yanked it out of her hands! "So, this set will be $37.50?". She said Yup! Holy Toledo Batman!! "I'll take it!!!" I almost screamed. The worker took it up to the cashier for me while I went running around the Trade Center looking for Troy.

I found Troy wheeling and dealing over some ties, which by the way, I think he needs to do a post about on his blog and show all the cool ties he got for a steal! Anyway, I grabbed him and dragged him to the cashier to show him the silver. He loved it too and was very excited about the price as well.

When we got home, we discovered a little silver treasure in the box as well. It is this commemorative collector silver plated spoon with JFK on it! Apparently there is a whole presidents set of these spoons and from what we could find out, JFK was the last spoon made in this series. This one spoon is going for about $8.00-$12.00. Woohoo! That is almost 1/3 the total price I paid for my whole set! The pictures didn't turn out very good. Once we clean it up, I reshow it. On the spoon part it has an engraved word, FRIENDSHIP.
