Surprise Gifts to myself!

I just love it when I give myself a surprise gift! Especially when I really do surprise myself. Are you totally confused now?

At the end of last summer, way past when summer items just got marked down. I'm taking "we will give YOU a $1.00 if you take this item home so we don't have to store it and inventory it" kind of mark downs (okay slight exaggeration). That, of course is my favorite time to buy stuff that I really liked but, it was way too high during the summer.

A lot of people don't want to purchase seasonal items after the season is over because they don't want to find a space to store it or they are just ready to get the season over with and move onto the next. For whatever reason, I love those people!

So, I purchased a couple of cute and fun outdoor patio accessories last year in October at deep discounted prices. I then put them in a box and stored them with our regular summer stored items (like the cushions to the outdoor furniture).

And of course, I totally forget about it until I pulled out our stuff to set up the patio. SURPRISE! "What? presents for me?" (okay, so it doesn't take a lot to make me happy these days!).

Here's an example of one of my "gifts"...

It's just an iron candle holder that kind of wraps around the umbrella pole on the patio table. I just liked it and thought it would be pretty when lit up in the evening. I got it at The Home Goods Store. I love this store. It's one of my favorite "Yippee, I have 1.25 hours of free time" kind of place to go and browse. So, the original price was $24.99 (according to the sticker, that was their reduce "compared to other stores" price of $39.99). Then it was marked down to $19.99. Next markdown to $10.00. Then down to 5.00. Then down to MY price of $2.50. By this point, the box was rather dented and smushed but, I checked it out before I bought it and nothing was missing and everything was in perfect condition.

It was like Christmas when I discovered my summer treasures!

Most of us who are really out looking for bargains, pick up things throughout the year to add to our gift closet (shelf/under the bed box/etc.) But, remember, it's okay to buy yourself (family/home) some things that are special but generally out of the budget at full price or even half price. When you find these treasures, tuck them away with that seasons items until the next time that season rolls around. Give yourself a little present to enjoy discovering!

As in my example, it was so fun to find these things and add them to our outdoor summer decor this year. I don't have the money to pick up some of the cute things I see that are on the shelves right now. They aren't going to go to my price level until after the season so, I don't get to enjoy them this summer. But, that's okay, because I have some new things and I will be back at the stores checking out what is left that gets marked down to MY price point. Of course, next summer you will see another post saying, "Woohoo! Look what surprise gifts I got myself for the summer!"

Also, take advantage of some fun summer things for the kids. You can get a lot of the summer toys that get marked down and make a "Summer Vacation Surprise Box". Because it never fails, summer rolls around and you are trying to save money for a vacation, or some home improvement projects to get done during the summer and so money gets pretty tight. Just think of the surprise and fun your kids will have when they get to discover all these little goodies for them now that school is out! You could even wrap the items up in some left over wrapping paper or tissue paper and really turn it into a "Kick of summer vacation" party with your own family.

  1. Hi Diann,
Home Goods is one of my favorite places to look for bargains. That is when it is not garage sale season! Have a great weekend. ~Cathy~

  3. Hi, I popped in to visit from Family Friday at Homemaker Barbi. I really enjoyed reading this article. We don't have a Home Goods but we do have a Tuesday morning and an interesting place called the Dump (sounds similar to your Home Goods :)). My senior mom and I had a great time perusing both a couple of months ago and found some wonderful Miss Spider dvds for the grandkids at a fraction of the price. I tucked one away in a bag and forgot about it. The other day I had a sick little one and went digging for something to help take his mind off his body. I was delighted to find the Miss Spider DVD that I had forgotten. Like you, it felt like a special treat to discover it! Especially when I got to listen to something new instead of the same DVDs we'd all heard more than a few times! :) :) :)

  12. How fun to surprise yourself! I kind of did that this weekend. Hit Bath & Body's 75% off sale, where I like to stock up on gifts... and purchased some bubble bath for ME! :)
