Make Something Monday

We are camping right now and we have this little pool, well actually, it is one of those turtle sandboxes with a lid, but we use it as a pool for the Little Princess. As I am sitting there watching her run in and out of the pool I thought to myself, "Self, you really should go get a cheapo rag rug to put down by her pool so it will help keep out the excess sand, dirt and grass that she keeps tracking into her little pool". Then I thought I really didn't want to drive to the nearest store and pay a higher price (little stores out in no wheres land have a tendency to charge a little more for stuff) for a little rug of some sort.

So, I sat there and thought about what I had to use as a rug. I guess I could use a towel or an old sheet or something. I didn't have any of my regular crafty or sewing stuff with me because we were camping. So, I thunk on it a bit. It needs to be practical and something that I can just rinse off with a hose.

A brainstorm hit, nearly knocked me over I say! LOL I went inside the trailer and gather a bunch of plastic shopping bags. I knew my mom had made the crocheted plastic bag rug before but, I don't know how to crochet and I have no sewing stuff with me. But, I knew I could figure something out. It may not be pretty, but it will do the job! LOL

So, while the Princess had her splash-a-thon, I sat outside braiding plastic bags together. I cut the handles apart and then down both sides of the bags to create a long piece of plastic. I just added bags to the last ones braided.

Here is a picture of the braiding started and the ends still to be braided. I told ya it wasn't going to be pretty. I will snip off the knotted ends before I 'sew" it together.

Okay, I sat there and braided about 21 bags together. I was pretty proud of myself! So, I started "sewing" them together with small strips of plastic bag. I just wove in between a couple of braids and knotted it. Kind of like tacking up a hem. Well, 21 bags obviously will not be nearly enough! I got it put together to discover I only had a rug about the size of a large potholder! LOL Here is a picture of my teeny tiny ruglet!

So, guess what I will be doing this afternoon? Yup, sitting outside braiding plastic bags. Now it's a mission to get it done! LOL
