I had a day off!

Hi Everyone. Yesterday I took the day off from the blogging world and the internet completely. Wow, that was a first! LOL Instead I spent the day with my Mom doing the whole "Girl's lunch and shopping day out". It was long over due. We had a wonderful day.

So, this is a bit of a different "Thrifty Thursday" Post.

After the day was over and we returned to my mom's house, we sat outside and had a glass of iced tea and were just gabbing. My mom got quiet for a moment and then just looked at me. I did the whole "What?" She said to me, "Do you realize that everywhere we went, you had some kind of coupon or got some sort of discount?". I looked at her like there must be more to the question. I said, "Umm, yeah...so?" After a few seconds passed she said, "I'm just so impressed! How did you do it?". That kind of took me off guard because it is such a natural thing for me. It has become second nature for me to think ahead about what I am going to be doing, where I am going, what I will be buying etc. It wasn't even something I thought about, I just do it.

My mom looked at me and could tell I was trying to think of what to say. She said, "Diann, you have amazed me for years at how well you and Troy have coped with all the things that have been thrown at you. You have made things work when other people would have walked away from such heavy burdens. At some point you realized you had to seriously watch your family money to make sure your family survived. But, you took it a step further. You decided that money was not going to be your reason for your happiness. You were not going to let it decide that." I looked at her and said, "Of course not. I value myself, my relationship with my husband and our family way more than I value money." She said, "I know. And that is why people look at you and say things like 'She seems to have it all'. And Diann, guess what? You do have it all!" I told her that I wouldn't be the person I am today had I not had her and my dad as examples. They have been thrown their own curve balls. Of course, lately, most of the "balls" came from her kids, me included. LOL She, as any good mom, feels the pain and worries about us when we are dealing with ugly things. She wants to grab ahold of us and wrap us up in a warm fuzzy blanket and make all the bad things go away.

Needless to say, I sat there and let the water works come. It was good. We ended up gabbing and joking and laughing and crying. It has been way too long since I had one of these days with my mom. I really needed it. It was so emotionally cleansing and ended up giving me that mental boost that we all need from time to time.

Wow, this isn't where this post was supposed to go! I planned on just telling you about the fun and good bargains I got yesterday.

So, moving on to my fun bargain day yesterday.....

First off, this was my mom's Mother's Day gift. I had given her a card and wrote inside that one day in the next couple of weeks, we would go out for lunch and to the bookstore and it was my treat to buy her two books of her choice. My mom is where I get my love of reading. She devours books as fast as Troy and I do and we like the same genre of books. So, gifting mom with a couple of new books will ultimately be a gift to me when she is done reading them! LOL

So, we went first for lunch. We went to Ruby Tuesdays because it was right across from Border's Bookstore. And of course, I had went through all my coupons ahead of time and found a BOGO free coupon. Woohoo! We gabbed and ate and enjoyed our lunch. Next, to Border's. I had two coupons for 30% off any book. Plus, they had a ton of trade size books marked down to $3.99 and it was a BOGO free deal! We snatched up about 30 books and headed over to Seattles Best to grab a ice coffee and go through all the books. And of course, I had a coupon for Seattles Best too! After about an hour of going through all the books and deciding which ones to get, we made our purchases and left Border's very happy!

From there we went over to Lane Bryant to check out what kind of clearance things they might have. I had a $15.00 off any $15.00 purchase. I scoured the clearance racks and found a skirt I really liked. It was clearanced to $17.99. I have to say, after not buying any clothes any where other than thrift stores, that clearanced price almost choked me! But, after using the $15.00 off coupon and paying $3.17, I felt a little better.

After that we headed to Kohl's. I had a $10.00 off $10.00 purchase coupon for there. I wanted to get a plain simple t-shirt to go with the skirt and maybe a pair of earrings or a necklace to match. They had a huge clearance sale going on but, to me, their prices are still way too high. After going through all the clearanced clothes, I didn't find anything that would work and even if I did, like I said, the prices were too high. So, I just meandered around the clothing department and found the plain simple t-shirts. They were regularly $10.99 but were on sale for $7.99. Once again, I thought that was way too high but, I found a shirt that matched the skirt and figured I wasn't going to pay for it anyway because of the coupon. Knowing I had to spend at least $10.00 to use the coupon, I went over to the clearanced jewelry area. I found a pair of earrings for $3.99 that matched the outfit and so I ended up spending $2.49 at Kohls after the coupon.

So, here is a pic of my $5.66 outfit I got.
